HULA CUP REGATTA:
3RD
ANNUAL FLORIDA SUNFISH WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP
On Saturday, May 10, 2003, 16 Sunfish sailors from 14 to 72
years of age from 10 to 72 years gathered on Sarasota Bay for the All-Women’s
Hula Cup Regatta. The Sunfish
race course set by Charlie Clifton, John Steele, Eric Erickson and assisted by
Irene Miracle and the Rom Family from Venice was well-adjusted during the
races to accommodate the windshifts. 1st in Junior Sunfish was Charlotte
Sims from Venice, 1st Senior Mindy Strauley, 1st Master Ursula Olson, SSS, and
1st Grand Master Loretta Garber, SSS. The highlight of the day was the
presentation to Ursula Olson, overall 1st Place Sunfish winner, with the
Florida State Women’s Sunfish Championship Perpetual Trophy. This
particular trophy was a finely refinished "vintage" mahagony
daggerboard given by the Luffing Lassies with Brass plates for engraving the
winner’s name each year. The Hula Cup awards given to the 1st, 2nd, and
3rd place recipients were created by Susan Allen-Wroblewski, Sarasota artist
and member of the Luffing Lassies. The Hula Cup, given to each
competitor, was designed by Cindy Clifton. A hawaiian-style buffet was
served at the awards and enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Wanda Purzycki,
Fran Mitchell, Julie Burnett, and all the wonderful volunteers at the Sarasota
Sailing Squadron.
