See if you can guess who this is. He and his kids spent many hours racing with us in Sunfish even though his first love is clearly the Laser. http://propercourse.blogspot.com

Charles Zusman long time friend of SANJL recently retired from his full-time post at the Star Ledger and immediately launched a blog about boating in the area. Check it out. He very often mentions SANJL!

Aug 2 SANJL Midget and Junior Regatta (O) – Hunterdon SC, Spruce Run Reservoir, Clinton, NJ
Aug 16 SANJL Midget and Junior Championships (O) – Highland Lakes CC, Highland Lake, NJ

Junior Sunfish sailing on the lakes is seeing a resurgence. Several of our local clubs have thriving junior programs. Many kids are learning to sail and race, with some kids regularly traveling to regattas. The centerpiece of our local junior season has always been the SANJL junior regattas. Started in 1978, these events have seen successive generations of juniors progress from being new kids at their first regatta to eventually becoming expert racers.

This year there will be two separate SANJL junior regattas. The first one is an open event at Hunterdon Sailing Club on August 2nd. The second is the SANJL Youth Championship sailed at Highland Lakes. The winners at the Highland Lake event will be awarded the perpetual SANJL Youth Trophies (Junior and Midget). At the HSC event, the overall winner from a NJYRU member club, will be awarded the NJYRA Sunfish Junior Championship Trophy.

There will be several excellent loaner boats available for each event. The boats will be reserved on a first called, first served basis. If you would like to reserve a boat give me a call - Steve Manson 973-366-1448 and I'll hook you up. If you already have a boat, see if you can persuade your parent or coach to help you transport your Sunfish and come join us.

The regatta at Highland Lake will be sailed for the overall SANJL Junior Championship. The regatta at Hunterdon Sailing Club will not count toward the Championship. It will however, be used to determine the NJYRA Junior Sunfish Champion. No more than four races will be scheduled for each day. If all four races are completed, one throw-out will be allowed to calculate the standings for the day.

To compete as a Midget sailor, an individual shall not have attained his or her 14th birthday by the end of 2008. In Midget Doubles, both skipper and crew shall be Midgets. To compete as a Junior sailor, the individual shall not have attained his or her 19th birthday by the end of 2008. In Junior Doubles, both skipper and crew shall be Juniors.

The SANJL Junior Championships are a great opportunity for kids to improve their racing skills by competing at different venues and against different sailors from those at their home club. To enhance this learning, at each event there will be a SANJL regatta coach who will provide advice to all entrants and give a quick debrief and feedback on the day’s racing before the awards ceremony.

All sailors must wear USCG approved life jackets at all times when on the water. If you have any questions, give me a call. -Steve Manson (973-366-1448)

The 2008 SANJL series is in full swing! Don't miss out on the fall regattas. Everyone is welcome!

Four one-day regattas will be held for the overall SANJL Sunfish Championship. All sailors will race together in one fleet, with trophies presented in both "Championship" and "Challenger" divisions. No more than 4 races will be sailed on any race day. No throw-outs will be used in determining the daily regatta standings. But 4 throw-outs will be used to calculate a sailor’s overall series finish.

To qualify for overall series prizes, sailors must be a 2008 members of the USSCA. Sailors may participate in individual regattas without joining the USSCA, but to be scored for the championship, 2008 class membership is required.

The championship will be governed by the racing rules of the ISAF with the prescriptions of US Sailing. The class rules of the USSCA will apply.
