GAIL HEAUSLER WINS THE NORTH AMERICAN WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP -- by Vicki Palmer

With 39 women Sunfish sailors from all over the country, the competition was challenging, exciting and even fun. Winner Gail Heausler from Tampa, FL, narrowly beat out Anne Patin of NY for the top spot.  See the posted results for all place finishers.  In wind conditions that ranged from light and flukey to 8-10 on Day one to winds cranking 12-14 in all 4 races on Day 2, Heausler kept all challengers at bay by scoring many bullets. But those trying included a first-time regatta sailor to seasoned veterans to 5 youth sailors. Four UCONN women sailed near the top of the fleet in every race with two of them placing in the final Top Five.  We see more champions in the making!  And that includes Abby Hayward, the Top Winner youth sailor from FL.  The word is everyone would do something like this again! How could they not?! Regatta Chair Melissa Shepstone and her committee of helpers hosted a spectacular event with the weather gods providing perfect winds and lots of sunshine. Plans are already in the making to get ready for next year's Women's North Americans in Fairhope, Alabama, another wonderful Gulf Coast sailing venue.
