Brangiforte Wins Massapoag, Yankee Duo Up Next

Posted September 15, 2017

Bill Brangiforte narrowly beat out Andy David and a 25-boat fleet at the 68th-annual Massapoag (MA) Yacht Club Regatta.

The outcome wasn’t decided until the last leg of the 10th, and final, race, which Brangiforte won. He finished with a net of 29 points to David’s 32. John Fonseca (42 pst) was 3rd, Scott Greenbaum (44 Pts) 4th and Simon Bertocci (52 pts) was 5th.

With 25 boats the Sunfish class was by far the largest fleet of the six classes that set a record for most boats to ever compete in the regatta (67 boats).

Conditions were fantastic for the most part. A shifty N-NW wind that ranged from 5 to 12 knots ruled 8 of the ten races, with extremely light air for the final 2 races on Saturday.

Diane Kampf and the entire Massapoag Yacht Club were terrific hosts, with their usual great time (and eats/drinks) ashore. PRO Gary Werden did a particularly great job managing all those boats/fleets on a small lake!

The venerable Yankee Duo regattas will be held the weekend of Sept 23-24 at the Orleans Yacht Club on Cape Cod. It’s a two-day event, but each day is a separate regatta. Saturday is the Chowder Cup (chowder at lunch), while Sunday is the Just Deserts Regatta. Sail one or sail both. It’s a fun way to end the summer sailing season with hosts from the Sherborn Yacht Club.
