Opening Saturday dawned with a steady rain that was forecast to have thunderstorms and is believed that forecast caused many sailors to choose to stay home.  The Sunfish and Lightning faithful, however, gathered once again for this longstanding regatta to sail and race, then later share memories of long time Devils Lake Yacht Club member and sailing champion Bruce Goldsmith.  Perhaps a stinger or two also enhanced a few memories?  This regatta was formerly called “This One’s for Fun,” and fun has remained an important component of the weekend.  A new skill game was introduced Saturday night involving a spinnaker pole and was won by a Lightning team; you’ll have to attend next year to learn about it!  Racing commenced at 2:00pm Saturday as the warm drizzle quit and three competitive races were sailed in good but dropping breezes before the wind quit.  Sunday was a beautiful, sunny, warm, but without a breath of wind.  Saturday’s results were declared final at 11:00am so sailors could pack up and start home.  Dan Norton has already qualified for the 2017 Sunfish World Championship, and this Regional was designated to qualify two sailors, so Ron McHenry and Josh Kerst receive the berths from this event.  The club did a great job with strong race committee, great on shore amenities, and capabilities for housing, camping, and warm welcome.  Next year we will work to make sure more sailors realize they should make “This One’s for Fun!”—Gail Turluck
