Team Florida travels to Austin
Team Florida was well represented at the 2018 Women’s Sunfish North American Championship held at Lake Travis, Texas. Six Floridians attended this annual event representing the range of sailors we have actively participating in the class, from long time seasoned racers to newer racers, yet all enthusiastic and willing to travel. Gail Heausler finished fourth overall with solid scores all in the top ten places, quite an accomplishment in light flukey winds typical for lake sailing. A transport from Houston to Hobie Sound on the FL east coast, Joanne Kolius, finished fifth. Linda Schwartz and Ursula Olson from the Luffing Lassies of the Sarasota Sailing Squadron drove there while the rest of us flew out and sailed borrowed boats, including Jacki Booker and Jennifer Means, also of the Luffing Lassies, Gail and Lynne Randall, both from DIYC. Lee Parks, a long-time Sunfish sailor from Newport, RI, is becoming a part-time Floridan so considers herself an honorary member of Team Florida.
Next year’s event will be in CT, at the Niantic Yacht Club, October 5-6, 2019. Make your plans early to attend this fun regatta.
