With the remnants of Hurricane Jose impacting conditions, John Fonseca and Alan Beckwith took the top spots at the Chowder Cup and Just Deserts Regattas, collectively known as the Yankee Duo.
Sailed at Town Cove in front of the Orleans Yacht Club on Cape Cod, 16 sailors faced fog, drizzle and a stiff northerly on Saturday. Fonseca, who has been outstanding all summer back in a Sunfish after nearly a decade away, threw out a 3 to top Bill Brangiforte and Alan Beckwith, who has also been super fast this year.
Sunday saw warmer, drifter conditions to start the day but a light northerly filled in enough to get 16 boats around the course for five races. In the end Beckwith beat Chris Demler -- who was back in a Sunfish for the first time in 24 years! Ken Charles was third, just one point behind Beckwith and losing a tie-breaker to Demler.
The Sherborn Yacht Club, who has been organizing these events for decades (back to the '70s?), did their usual bang-up job keeping things organized and making sure the sailors were fed. The Orleans Yacht Club were great hosts.
The Sherborn Yacht Club -- largely Deb Barnet, Roger Demler, Sally Demler, Pat and Doug Cassel (I know there are others, but they have been the stalwarts all these years) -- -- is working with the Orleans Yacht Club to best organize and sponsor the event. The Duo will live on, perhaps for the second 50 years!
The Class would like to thank the Sherborn Yacht Club for all their years of support and competition. The Duo is a special event for many of us due to the great people at the SYC.
