John Fonseca Takes 2017 Upstate NY Sunfish Regional

19 boats converged on beautiful Canandaigua Lake for the Upstate Regional Championship August 12-13.  On Saturday morning, the RC did its best to get something going in a fluky southerly but after awhile it became apparent that the wind would not last. So in for lunch we went.  After lunch, the south breeze started to fill and out we went.   We got one race in right before a thunderstorm hit with breeze in the 15-25 mph range.  We quickly headed in to wait the storm out.  As soon as the storm ended, back out we went for two more races in a shifty westerly breeze.  John Fonseca was very consistent as he won the first three races.  Jim Gindling was in 2nd and Mike Fortner was in a close 3rd.   A light northwesterly greeted us Sunday morning and the race committee started the first race of the day right on time.  We sailed four races in a shifty breeze that also saw significant swings in velocity.  Sometimes you would be fully hiked and at other times, you would be healing your boat to leeward to keep the sail full.  When everything was said and done, John Fonseca was 1st, Jim Gindling was 2nd, and John Meyer was 3rd.  Mary Schmidt won the Women's, and Nicole Gindling won the Junior's.

The Race Committee did a fabulous job keeping the course square and getting in four races.    Thanks again to all who came.  We look forward to seeing everyone next year.
