News on 2018 New England Regional Championships

Posted December 18, 2017

Dear New England Sunfish Sailors,

I hope everyone is keeping warm and enjoying the holiday season.

I wanted to share with you the news that I have made the difficult decision to move the first 2018 New England Regional Championship to the Hyannis (MA) Yacht Club on the weekend of June 16-17, 2018.

By moving to Hyannis we will gain the benefit of holding a Regional at a different club for the first time in decades. Hyannis has been great to work with, and the club leadership is excited to have us! There is a ton of close-by lodging and food options, as well as great camping. Look for the entry fee to be lower than in recent years, as well. Details will follow, but it should be a great event!

Leaving Barrington Yacht Club -- our host for almost 60 years! --  is a big decision. It’s easily the hardest call I’ve had to make in my almost 10 years as a Regional rep. I know many of you, myself included, have decades of memories and friends at the BYC. It’s my sincere hope that we will be back there again in the future, and I don’t see any reason why this move should impact the popular frostbiting series, which is not a class-sanctioned event. We are deeply appreciative for the hospitality and hard work that BYC members provide us on so many cold winter afternoons!

The reasons for this change are many, but here are some:

  • The class office and senior leadership believes strongly that moving regionals around from venue to venue is key to exposing the class to new people and growing the class. New England is unique in having our two regionals at the same venues for decades.
  • The cost of the Barrington Regional has gone up quite a bit in recent years – especially when you factor in the late fee. That has contributed to smaller fleets for that event.
  • We have been getting less for our money over time.
  • The Club has failed to follow some of the key requirements for hosting a class-sanctioned championship, specifically checking membership of registrants. That has resulted in some competitors who are not Class members participating in recent regionals.

I hope that we will be back in Barrington again for regionals and other championships in the future, and I have told the BYC leadership the same. But for now, we need to do what's best for our goal of growing the class and serving our members. I wish to thank the BYC for all that they have done for us!

The second Regional of 2018 will be held again at the Wequaquet Lake Yacht Club, also on Cape Cod. That event will be the weekend of July 21-22.

Happy Holidays,

Eric Woodman
