The Austin Yacht Club hosted the first Sunfish event in the South West Region for 2017. A total of seven Sunfish registered for the two day event in conjunction with a major Club event, Governors Cup Regatta. The event hosted a multitude of different boats using three different courses for the racers. First was a long distance course up the lake for big boats with a lunch break and racing back to the club. Then there was two different courses for the one design boats that included J-70’s, J-80’s, Tri-Marinas, Ensign’s Centerboard Boats and Sunfish. This was a circuit stop for the 70’s, Sunfish and Catalina 22’s which made for an interesting event.
Though the turn out for Sunfish was low, the course was very challenging with the conditions. Saturday, saw winds of 18-25 with gust to 35 on a two and a half mile course where five races were completed. Needless to say the sailors were tired by the end of the day, but stayed and enjoyed a great BarB-Q Dinner with dancing to two bands. Sunday, conditions improved a lot, with winds only reaching 15-25 with gust to 30 followed by two races.
Next race for the Region will be at Conroe TX in conjunction with the Texas Centerboard Circuit and Texas Sunfish Circuit, April 22-23rd.
