Women’s Sunfish North American’s To Be Largest Ever
Posted September 07, 2016
This year’s Women’s Sunfish North American’s is turning out to be the largest ever -- with 42 entrants! Yes, 42 women sailors from all over the country. There will be the perfect blend of:
Women who have never sailed in a Sunfish regatta before!
3 women who have never even been to a regatta in their lives, and they are excited!
Women who compete in Sunfish regattas whenever they can, and
Champion sailors who continually lead the fleet with Top Five finishes.
Melissa Shepstone, Regatta Chair, has been a champion mentor to many of these beginner sailors in the Shelter Island area by inviting them to sail in smaller, local regattas and just come practice when they have the time. One woman sailor almost quit sailing last year, but Melissa and friends talked her into trying it for another year, and now she’s not only finishing Sunfish races but was just awarded a Most Improved Racer at last year’s Award ceremony. Another woman entrant is so excited that she’s going out to buy a starting watch and spray top tomorrow! Melissa said that watching these women sailors not only improve their skills, but also gain confidence has made mentoring them a highly rewarding experience. And she noticed that these women are standing a little taller as a result!
Taking an educated guess, Melissa said that probably 60% of the registrants are over 50. So what does that say? The Sunfish is a boat for sailors of all ages; for sailors at all levels of sailing experience and, in the case of this event, for women who love a challenge and never give up!
Stay tuned for regatta reports as they happen.
