The weather was a bit crazy. Saturday, the winds kept shifting. Sometimes there was no wind at all. One race didn’t even finish in time. Sunday had its own issues with morning fog threatening, then delaying, then returning mid-races so navigation was, at times, by compass.
Opening Saturday dawned with a steady rain that was forecast to have thunderstorms and is believed that forecast caused many sailors to choose to stay home. The Sunfish and Lightning faithful, however, gathered once again for this longstanding regatta to sail and race, then later share memories of long time Devils Lake Yacht Club member and sailing champion Bruce Goldsmith.
Four-time winner Dan Norton of Hudson, Michigan, had an injury preventing his coming to defend, so the Sunfish sailors assembled to determine a new champion. While the air temperatures were a little cool, enthusiasm was hot to get out racing and have some fun.
