SUBJECT: USSCA President's Corner July 2026

President's Corner
July 2026

Summertime! Sailing season is in full swing with many regattas scheduled to look forward to. Thank you to the many people who work so hard to bring us the opportunity to sail in them. Thank you also to those of you who are leading clinics to help strengthen the skills of everyone who sails. One of the recent clinics held this year was in conjunction with the New York regional at Rochester Canoe Club. Doug Kaukeinen did an outstanding job organizing the regatta and Dan Hesse ran an amazing clinic on Boat Control/ When, How and Why we go SLOW. This was recorded and is online on the website. USSCA Class Members, please go to Sunfish Class Association - Home Page and LOGIN, look for the Member Only Content > USSCA Videos > USSCA CLINICS. If you have not yet joined the class, please sign up on the website at Join the Class

Dan will be running another clinic at the 6th Annual Megabowl Regatta on August 22nd and 23rd at Saratoga Lake. The clinic will be on Friday August 21st; additionally, each participant will be entered into a random drawing on Saturday morning for the chance to win one race of individual coaching with Dan. This will include strategy and debriefing. Youth attend for free using the code YOUTH 26 at registration and there will be team scoring! https://sailsaratoga.org/regatta/48KMbO3NXF

USSCA 2026 Annual Meeting and Elections

I would also like to thank Barrington Yacht Club for hosting the North Americans. The regatta was very well run and we had wind that ran from to light to pretty breezy and gave us all a chance to enjoy some great racing. We held the Annual Meeting for the class on Saturday June 6th. The full presentation is online at - CLICK HERE.

The outcome of the elections for the 2026 board was announced at the meeting. Thank you to the work of the Nominating Committee led by Hank Saurage for this year's slate. Elected this year for a 2-year term:

  • President, Susan Mallows
  • Treasurer, Hal Gilreath
  • Regatta Coordinator, Elaine Parshall
  • Youth Coordinator, Judy Lazo
  • New England Regional Representative, Paul Dierze
  • New York Regional Representative, Lee Montes
  • Mid-Atlantic Regional Representative, Richard Skeen
  • Florida Peninsula Regional Representative, Dan Smith

Thank you to Connie Miller, past Mid-Atlantic Regional Representative and Vicki Palmer past Youth Coordinator for serving in their respective roles and giving so much time and effort to the class. We have all benefited from the years of dedication they have contributed.

President's Awards

I would also like to announce the recipients of this year's President's Awards. These individuals are nominated by members of the class; a committee led by Will Kresic reviewed the submissions and made the recommendations for the awards. The nominations clearly reflect the gratitude the class feels for the hard work and commitment these individuals have contributed.

  • Volunteer of the Year - Paul Dierze
  • Member of the Year - Hank Saurage
  • Youth of the Year - Brendan Mack
Volunteer of the Year - Paul Dierze

Paul Dierze, year after year, has consistently contributed his selfless service to the Sunfish Class and he is a highly deserving recipient of the USSCA Volunteer of the Year Award. As the New England Class Representative, Paul has repeatedly gone above and beyond his role to support sailors, regattas, and the growth of the class.

Paul played a key role in bringing major events to New England, including helping secure a venue for the 2022 and 2026 Sunfish North American Championships after navigating multiple false starts with prospective host clubs. He continues to work tirelessly behind the scenes, including coordinating charter boats to ensure sailors from across the country can participate.

Perhaps most famously, Paul has become an unofficial logistics backbone of the Sunfish Class. With his van, he routinely transports boats, spare parts, and equipment up and down the East Coast, to the interior of the country and beyond—enabling sailors to attend events such as Midwinters, Women’s North Americans, and national championships. He keeps the events accessible, often delivering boats and parts directly to regatta sites.

Paul’s dedication knows no geographic limits. He traveled from Massachusetts to Indiana for the 2025 Women’s North American Championship simply to bring boats, support competitors, and serve as pit crew. His willingness to do whatever is needed, wherever it is needed, has made a tangible difference to countless sailors.

Through his consistency, generosity, and tireless commitment, Paul Dierze has strengthened participation, removed barriers to entry, and exemplified what it means to volunteer for the good of the class.

Member of the Year - Hank Saurage

Hank Saurage is a lifelong Sunfish sailor whose leadership, generosity, and dedication have had a profound and lasting impact on the USSCA, making him a most deserving recipient of the Member of the Year Award.

Hank has been instrumental in the successful launch of the USSCA Foundation, playing a central role in its early growth and financial stability. As a major fundraiser and contributor, Hank not only spurred widespread donations but personally matched those contributions, providing critical seed funding. Because the Foundation is still relatively new, Hank’s leadership and generosity have positioned it on strong financial footing and helped ensure its long-term viability in supporting youth sailing for many years to come.

Beyond his foundational work, Hank’s connection to the Sunfish class spans more than five decades. He began sailing a Sunfish at the age of 10 -- the first boat he ever sailed solo -- and has raced competitively for more than fifty years. Along the way, he has built lifelong friendships, developed skills, and created memories that define the spirit of the class. His sailing accomplishments range from innovative contributions, including knots named in his honor, to a second-place finish at the World Championships. Remarkably, Hank has competed in twenty-five Sunfish World Championships.

Hank currently serves as the USSCA Nominations Chair, continuing his long-standing commitment to leadership and service within the class.

Through his extraordinary generosity, sustained leadership, and lifelong devotion to Sunfish sailing, Hank Saurage exemplifies the values, spirit, and legacy of the USSCA.

Youth of the Year - Brendan Mack

Brendan Mack is a 16‑year‑old Sunfish sailor from the Greater Wildwood Yacht Club in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey. He began sailing a Sunfish in 2022 and entered organized Sunfish racing later that year.

In 2023, Brendan competed in all seven regattas of the Mid‑Atlantic Yacht Racing Association (MAYRA) South Jersey Summer Series finishing fifth overall. He again sailed the full series in 2024 and finished third overall. In 2025, at age 15, he returned for a third consecutive full season and won the Sunfish fleet overall in the MAYRA South Jersey Summer Series. He is the GWYC Sunfish Club Champion for the third year in a row, the Commodore's Regatta Champion for the second year in a row and The Most Dedicated Youth Racer Award at GWYC recipient for the third year in a row

Brendan is a SpinSheet Century Club member for 2025 having logged an incredible 109 days on the water during the 2025 season. He attended racing clinics, sought out a sailing coach to improve his skills as well as a personal trainer for fitness and sailed many events to build experience. He embraces the camaraderie of USSCA, helping other sailors at his club and regatta events and is a US Sailing Level 1 Instructor teaching sailing in the GWYC summer program in multiple classes.

Brendan Mack embodies the Corinthian spirit of sailing through his perseverance, discipline, humility, and generosity. His journey from beginner to fleet champion and role model reflects the very best of youth sailing and the future of the USSCA.

I hope all of you have a great summer of sailing - as always please feel free to reach out with any suggestions. I am always happy to hear from you.
