Letter from the ISCA President

Dear members of ISCA, receive greetings from your class leadership.

Before starting, I want to thank the members of ISCA and National Associations for supporting the class leadership during 2025, which obliges us to fulfill with greater responsibility the plans for a better future and growth of the class.

With 2025 coming to an end, and after having approved ZIM Sailing as the new ISCA boat manufacturer at the end of 2024, we have had a very busy year working with World Sailing (WS) to achieve the proposed goals and comply with all WS regulations to continue maintaining the international status of the ISCA Class.

The joint work between ISCA, Zim Sailing, and WS consisted of achieving the three proposed objectives: 1. ISCA Boat Construction Manual; 2. Approval of Zim Sailing as the manufacturer of the ISCA boat by WS; 3. Signing of the Agreement between ISCA and WS, which guarantees the international status of the ISCA Class.

Construction Manual: The ISCA Class, in coordination with Zim Sailing, decided to look for “Sunfish” from different years produced before 2016, to scan them and find the best consistent design produced. Once the scanning was done, the Construction Manual was developed, and the molds (which are property of the ISCA Class) were manufactured to start production. Production of the ISCA boat began in May 2025, and a technical visit from an international WS measurer, was able to certify that the manufacturing complied with the parameters of the Construction Manual.

Approval of Zim Sailing as the manufacturer of the ISCA boat by WS: After the report from the international measurer, WS sent a letter dated Oct 30, 2025, to Zim Sailing approving them as the manufacturers of the ISCA boat and approving the molds for its production.

Agreement between WS and ISCA: finally, on Dec 1, 2025, the Class received the agreement between WS and ISCA, signed by the CEO of WS (previously, on Oct 30, 2025, the ISCA Class had already sent the signed agreement). This agreement grants ISCA the status of an International Class and allows us to hold Worlds, Continentals, Regionals, Nationals, etc., championships, such as PanAm, Central America and Caribbean (CAC), and South American (Odesur) Games, under the auspices of World Sailing.

As we can see, after two and a half years of hard work, we have been able to secure the future of the ISCA Class, and a new beginning that will allow us to plan and develop the Class. I can only thank Chris Williams, Vice President of ISCA, John Butine, ISCA Measurer, and Martine Zurinskas, ISCA Administrator, for the great work carried out during this process. My thanks also extend to Zim Sailing, in the persons of George Yioulos, Bo Williams, and Sam Patterson, with whom we have had regularly scheduled meetings to stay informed about progress, challenges, and solutions to relevant issues. From my point of view, we could not have chosen a better partner for this new beginning of the Class.

The 2025 World Championship, held in Salinas, Ecuador, from December 5 to 12, with 84 competitors, was a complete success. It was the first time the Women's World Championship was held, alongside the Youth and Master World Championships, fulfilling all four events with the WS requirements for a World Championship. It was a monumental accomplishment and thank you to Salinas Yacht Club for all the support.

My congratulations to all the competitors who made these events a complete success. Especially to the podium of the Open World Championship: Simón Gómez from Colombia, Jean Paul de Trazegnies from Peru, and Sebastian Medina from Puerto Rico. Likewise, to our first Female World Champion, Caterina Romero from Peru, Tadas Koreiva from Ecuador, Youth World Champion, and Peter Stanton from the USVI, Master World Champion.

I can only thank the members of the ISCA Executive Committee and the class administrator for their hard work during 2025, and all the NICAs for their constant support in helping us achieve our goals and consolidate the future of the class.

I hope everyone enjoys the year-end festivities, and that we return refreshed for a 2026 full of joy and good fortune, allowing us to continue growing our class.

2025 ISCA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
4 World Championship titles at Salinas Yacht Club, Ecuador

Submitted by Chris Williams

Four international were awarded at the 2025 ISCA (Sunfish) World Championships held December 5-12 in Salinas, Ecuador. Prior to naming the 54th World Champion, the racing got underway on December 5-7 for the Youth, Women’s, and Masters World Championships.

This was the inaugural Women’s World Championship which was dominated by Caterina Romero (Peru) who discarded a second-place finish to post a perfect scoreline of firsts. She finished 19 points ahead of Tania Zimmerman (Peru), with Laura Jeffers (USA) of the Scuttlebutt Sailing Club as the top North American, placing seventh.

The Youth World Championship, for entrants that had not yet reached their 19th birthday, was handily won by Tadas Koreiva (Ecuador) who also had all firsts aside from a discarded second-place finish. He finished 21 points ahead of fellow Ecuadorian Rafael Sarrazin with Anais Craig (ISV) as the top North American finishing 17th.

Peter Stanton (USVI) prevailed in the Masters Worlds (40+ year olds) by 13 points over Andy Beeckman (USA). Stanton also won the Apprentice title (40-49 years) with other sub-titles going to Beekman (Master 50-59 years), Mike Ingham (USA, Grand Master 60-69), and Beech Higby (ISV, Great Grand Master 70-79).

The Open Worlds on December 9-12 attracted 84 competitors began with winds pushing 20 knots as multi-time World Champion Jean Paul de Trezegnies (Peru) took the early lead. But as the breeze moderated, he was overtaken by Simon Gomez Ortiz who became the first Colombian to win an ISCA Worlds.  Canada’s Luke Ramsay was the top North American in 4th, followed by Conner Blouin (USA), the defending champion.

Women accounted for 21% of the fleet in the Open Worlds, with Maria Jose Cucalon (Ecuador) as the top female, finishing 16th overall while Tadas Korevia, also of Ecuador, was the top youth in 11th overall.

Zim Sailing, the exclusive builder of the ISCA, supplied 68 brand-new boats. In addition, all competitors were issued new North Sails to equalize the boats.

Thank you also to the ISCA Leadership specifically Larry Mass the Worlds Coordinator for over 4 years of planning to make this event a reality.

Thank you Salinas Yacht Club!

It is with great thanks to Salinas Yacht Club, the organizers Justus Kemplar Tama and the board of directors for making the club open to all sailors, guests and coaches for this amazing event. The Yacht Club left no detail undone. It was noted by many that this is a 5-star facility. Race Committee team, International Judges panel, Dolley dudes (best ever), Medical Team on site just in case, and the Scoring Ladies!

Thank you Zim Sailing!

Thank you to the Zim Sailing team of Phil Krug, Langdon Junge and owner George Yioulous for being on site and supporting the event. The boats were delivered and unpacked 2 days before the sailors arrived, decaled with the Harken and Zim bow stickers, then prepped for sailor check out. Having our builder on site to support the fleet was critical for the success of this World Championship. George also delivered an excellent presentation to the sailors about the boats and manufacturing. Thank you to the ZIM team for supporting the ISCA Class and being a true partner.
