REGATTA NEWS
Young Adult ISCA Sailors Invade NAs

One thing that we noticed at North American's this year was the average age for 109 sailors dropped below 50 (47). Fun facts: We had 13 sailors in the Youth Division between the ages of 13 and 18 (4 USA youth and 9 International Youth).  For the Young Adult age bracket of 19-25, we had also 13 sailors (10 USA and 3 INTL).  So in total we had 26 sailors between the ages of 13 and 25 or almost a quarter of the fleet. This is significant to help grow the class with younger sailors capturing them earlier as opposed to waiting until they hit master years.

Thanks to an anonymous donor, seven Youth Grants were made available to USSCA sailors ages 19-25 to pay for the entry fee for NAs.  Thank you for the continued vision of USSCA to encourage our target growth group for getting out there!   We hope all these sailors will come back and participate in regional events.  A great fleet-building activity is to dust off those old boats in the parking lot and ask the local college kids if they want to sail them!

Dolf van der Giessen Race

Still exhausted from the Dolf van der Giessen races, Curacao region representative Alex Roose extended thanks to race management, photographers, lifeguards, newspaper reporters and Jan Sofat for his hospitality.

The Curacao Sunfish Sailing Association, under the leadership of Chairman Hans van der Gulik, is working hard on organizing the World Championships next June. All are welcome to lend assistance in any way.

2026 Bahamas International Sunfish Class Association (ISCA) National Championships

Submitted by Tamara Knowles

The 2026 Bahamas International Sunfish Class Association (ISCA) National Championships June 20-21 showcased fierce competition from around the country at Montagu Foreshore in Nassau. Sailors were challenged by weather and shifty conditions, especially on the first day, but all races were completed and a champion crowned: veteran Donnie Martinborough, a three-time Sunfish World Champion, from the Nassau Yacht Club.

Close behind in points were two competitors from the Exuma Sailing Club, Tanaj Manos, last year's champion, and Joss Knowles. Tanaj, age 19, and Joss hope to represent the Bahamas at the ISCA Worlds in St. Croix in November. Lori Lowe, president of the Bahamas Sailing Association (BSA), placed fourth overall, followed by Dawson Knowles of Long Island in fifth. Dawson's younger brother, Drake Knowles, was the highest ranked Youth sailor and finished in sixth place overall.

Hosting this kind of event in the Bahamas is logistically challenging, with boats shipping days before the regatta, sailors from the out-islands flying in and lodging, and trying to get as many sailors as possible involved to raise the level of competition. This year’s fleet more than doubled from last year's event, an encouraging sign for the class as a whole. Our fleet ranges from youth sailors still competing in the Optimists up to grand masters showing they still have what it takes to get top finishes. Sailing truly is an incredible sport to allow for such diversity.

Our country may be small, but our dreams to compete on bigger international stages are grand and longstanding. We're working hard to equip and prepare our sailors for larger events, and we hope to meet many of you as we go from one regatta to the next!

Mohican Sailing Club (Fleet 760) Runs Successful Big Fish & Little Pond Race Clinic and Regatta

Written by Doug Warren

On June 13-14th, the Mohican Sailing Club held its first Big Fish & Little Pond learn to race program and regatta in Lucas, OH.  We had a dozen very engaged new racers participate in on-shore training and on the water for coaching drills and practice on Saturday.  On Sunday, there was afternoon racing by the seminar participants as well as experienced racers. The weather cooperated;  thunderstorms held off until after the fleet had finished racing, enjoyed dinner and received trophies.  What a great way to get so many new racers out for a weekend and help grow the ISCA fleet in the Midwest.

Many thanks to Mark Kastel for running the program with his helper Mike Stratton.  Both traveled to the regatta site to teach and coach the new racers.  Also, kudos to Fleet 760 Captain Bill Sanderson for organizing the event. Any other clubs who want to run similar events should contact their USSCA Regional Representative to help set things up.
