What are Class Legal Parts for the ISCA® sailboat?
ISCA® has a longstanding tradition of vigorously protecting the one-design status of our boat and rules and measurements have been established to protect this status. No addition or alteration may be made to the ISCA authorized boat as supplied by the Builder except as specifically authorized by the rules which can be found at Rules and Measurements. With our new builder, Zim, the question has come up as to whether there are any changes in the rules or measurements.
The answer is that the only rules that have changed are those that allow ISCA to select the builder(s) and suppliers. Previously, the builder had complete control. Other rules remain the same, and specifically, quoting from the rules, “Unless specifically prohibited, any equipment that has ever been supplied by the Builder or a Supplier that was authorized by ISCA® or a predecessor at the time the item was supplied may be used on any boat.” “Builder” means any manufacturer duly authorized or licensed to build the ISCA authorized boat. A “Supplier” is any manufacturer duly authorized or licensed to produce parts for the ISCA approved boat, such as spars and sails.
Zim is providing parts identical or virtually so to those previously supplied, although there are some changes with the new boat. For example, Harken blocks WHICH MODEL??? 348 (forward) and 340 (aft) will be allowed on the boom for the mainsheet and a specific Harken block combination HSB271 (traveler bridle cable) linked with HSB464 (traveler main) will be supplied for the 2:1 mainsheet on new race-rigged boats. Parts can be bought from the Zim Dealer Network or directly from Zim Sailing.
The chart below shows which new parts MUST be purchased from Zim, or one of Zim’s dealers. Note that this means, for example, while Selden is an authorized supplier of spars, sailors cannot purchase directly from Selden. Those parts that are indicated as requiring a certification sticker will have this sticker on them:
If a dealer has older parts with certification stickers as required at the time of manufacture, those are legal as well.
Parts not shown in the chart below can be sourced from anywhere, but must conform to the class rules, and after installation the entire boat must conform to the class rules. Please contact the class office if you have questions.
